The Hungry Mind Community Centre is now home to a vibrant new mural, a project made possible by funding from CultuurSchakel and Fonds1818. The funds were secured by the dedicated efforts of former chairperson Chezzie Bergman and treasurer Joke Ruijgrok, and was brought to life by local artist Niels Weerheim
What makes this mural truly special is the way it was created. Niels didn’t just bring his artistic skills; he involved the people of Loosduinen and the international community from parents, teachers and students of The International School of The Hague. He led a workshop where participants brainstormed ideas for the design, contributing concepts that Niels wove into three distinct options. After careful consideration, The Hungry Minds Board of Directors chose the final design.
Niels spent a month during the summer bringing the mural to life, and in true community spirit, he invited locals to join him in the painting process. The result is not just a work of art but a tangible symbol of collaboration and shared pride—a testament to the volunteers who keep The Hungry Mind running day in and day out.
As a community centre run entirely by volunteers, this mural is a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together. From concept to completion, it embodies the dedication and creativity of everyone involved. The official unveiling took place on September 4th, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Corinne den Heijer, District Director of Loosduinen, and Niels himself, witnessed by community members, school families all gathering to celebrate this achievement.
We believe that our mural is more than a beautiful piece of art; it’s a reflection of the spirit of togetherness that defines The Hungry Mind, and it will continue to inspire and connect us for years to come.
